Ethical Issues in Practice Essay Sample

Ethical Issues in Practice

As a nurse practitioner, I might encounter various ethical issues in practice including patient autonomy, confidentiality, and end-of-life care. Patient autonomy refers to the right of the patient to make decisions about their own healthcare (Tracy & O’Grady, 2018). As a nurse practitioner, I may face ethical issues if the patient refuses treatment that I believe is necessary or requests a treatment that I believe is not in their best interest. In such cases, it is important to respect the patient’s autonomy and their right to make decisions about their own healthcare. I should explain the risks and benefits of the treatment and ensure that the patient has all the information they need to make an informed decision. Confidentiality refers to the obligation of healthcare professionals to keep patient information private (Miri et al., 2022). As a nurse practitioner, I might face ethical issues if a patient shares information that may harm themselves or others. In such cases, I have a duty to protect the patient and others, which may involve protecting confidentiality. However, I should always disclose information that is necessary and limit the disclosure to only authorized parties. End-of-life care refers to the care of patients who are nearing the end of their life (Bah & Sey-Sawo, 2020). As a nurse practitioner, I might face ethical issues if a patient requests that their life be ended through euthanasia or assisted suicide. In such cases, I should ensure that the patient is aware of all the available options for end-of-life care, including palliative care, and provide support to the patient and their family. I should also always seek to follow the laws and regulations of my state regarding end-of-life care (Bah & Sey-Sawo, 2020).
