Module 4 Assignment Policymaking Essay Guideline and Rubric                                   

Purpose

Policy plays an important role in health and healthcare delivery.  Policies can include laws, regulations, administrative actions, and protocol that aim to enhance the health of people, or to assure the delivery of safe, high quality healthcare services.  As trusted health professionals with a front-seat in healthcare delivery, nurses are positioned to engage in policymaking in order to optimize health outcomes, and to assure safe, high quality care. In order to participate, nurses must be familiar with the phases of the policymaking process. 

The purpose of this assignment is to identify a healthcare issue that could be addressed through policymaking efforts.  The phases of the policy process will be applied, and a discussion of nursing engagement throughout the policymaking process will be included.

• CO 1: Examine healthcare policymaking models, regulatory, and legislative processes that impact healthcare across complex systems. (PO 5)
• CO 4: Investigate the role of the nurse as an advocate for health and healthcare delivery within an evolving economic and regulatory environment. (POs 1, 2, and 5)

Examine the policy process and consider opportunities for nurses to contribute across each phase.  Respond to the questions noted below.

• Describe one healthcare economics or policy-related issue and its importance.
• Explain how the policy process could be applied to address the issue, describing the application of each phase.
• Explain how the nurse can contribute to policymaking at each phase in the process.
