Developing a Small Nursing Informatics Project for Your Organization, Part 1

When developing a small nursing informatics project, it is crucial to use project management tools and strategies to outline how you would support and potentially implement the initiative. Although you may not have the opportunity to carry out the project, this assignment allows you to apply essential skills and consider the steps involved in executing such a project in your nursing practice. Your task is to define a small informatics project that would benefit your healthcare organization or nursing practice. You should discuss this idea with leadership, explaining that you will be responsible for designing, planning, and proposing how to implement and evaluate the project, which must be completed within a 9-week time frame during this course. The project will be delivered in two parts.

Preparation Begin working with a manager or consider how you will collaborate with one to finalize the details of your small informatics project. If time permits and the project type allows, you will also implement and evaluate the outcomes. Over the next several weeks, you will create and apply the necessary components to complete the project.

By Day 7 of Week 5

You should continue developing the Scope, Charter, and SWOT Analysis. In the coming weeks, you will add a Gap Analysis, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), and Project Timeline to your submission (a total of six tools; 8–9 pages including application and rationale for each). The full submission will be due in Week 5.

For Week 2: Conduct a SWOT Analysis

As part of the project design, you are required to conduct a SWOT analysis, which will provide valuable information for the Scope and Charter. You can create the analysis in a Word document using a table format. For guidance, you can refer to the video “How to Perform a SWOT Analysis.” This step is relevant not only for this project but also for your DNP Project or dissertation. Every project, including your DNP Project, requires a clear plan outlining what will and will not be done. This information is defined in a project’s scope and charter.

While you are not required to submit the SWOT analysis this week, starting early will ensure you’re prepared to meet the upcoming deadlines.
