How has evidence-based practice (EBP) evolved? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this evolution for public health nurses and communities?
Evidence-based practice (EBP) has become a cornerstone in the field of nursing, particularly in public health. EBP originated from the need to implement strategies and policies that have been proven through research to improve health outcomes. As early as the 1960s, psychologists and educational researchers identified effective treatment procedures, and by the late 20th century, federal agencies began promoting evidence-based practices across healthcare settings (Biglan & Ogden, 2008). EBP is defined as a problem-solving approach to healthcare delivery that integrates well-researched evidence with clinical expertise, patient data, and individual patient preferences, ultimately leading to better health outcomes (Melnyk et al., 2010).

The evolution of EBP brings significant advantages for public health nurses. It equips them with scientifically backed methods to address health issues, ensuring that interventions are both effective and efficient. Communities benefit from improved health services and outcomes, as decisions are informed by the best available evidence. EBP also encourages continual learning and improvement, fostering a culture of accountability in healthcare.
However, there are challenges. The adoption of EBP in public health nursing is often hindered by limited funding, insufficient time, a shortage of skilled personnel, and inadequate support from leadership and policymakers (Jacobs et al., 2012). These barriers can delay the implementation of evidence-based strategies, reducing their potential impact on public health.
