Introduction
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that millions of people worldwide are battling with. Adult-onset asthma is one such form of asthma that affects adults over the age of 20. It is often characterized by a combination of respiratory symptoms, including wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness, which are caused by inflammation and constriction of the airways (Trivedi & Denton, 2019).
Current Evidence-Based Guidelines
The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has developed evidence-based guidelines for the management of asthma in adults. The guidelines recommend that the diagnosis of adult onset asthma should be based on the presence of typical asthma symptoms, such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath, and objective evidence of variable expiratory airflow limitation, which can be assessed by spirometry or peak expiratory flow rate monitoring (Reddel et al., 2022). The guidelines recommend the use of inhaled corticosteroids as the first-line treatment for asthma, with the addition of long-acting bronchodilators for patients with moderate to severe disease. Patients should also receive education on self-management, including the use of inhalers and the recognition of symptoms that indicate worsening asthma.
