Purpose
Policy plays an important role in health and healthcare delivery. Policies can include laws, regulations, administrative actions, and protocol that aim to enhance the health of people, or to assure the delivery of safe, high quality healthcare services. As trusted health professionals with a front-seat in healthcare delivery, nurses are positioned to engage in policymaking in order to optimize health outcomes, and to assure safe, high quality care. In order to participate, nurses must be familiar with the phases of the policymaking process.
The purpose of this assignment is to identify a healthcare issue that could be addressed through policymaking efforts. The phases of the policy process will be applied, and a discussion of nursing engagement throughout the policymaking process will be included.
